With Ethiopia's Abiy Ahmed Ali winning the Nobel Prize for peace and Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge running a marathon in sub-two hours( I hour,59 minutes, 40 seconds), the signs are positive for this great continent. Institutionalizing a system that allows for such advancement would, however, marks the difference between having "one-off" global stars and an unending retinue of galaxies. The sustenance of democratic institutions requires that all stakeholders in the process adhere to principles like the tenet of accountability and transparency. From the process of voters' registration to the eventual declaration of results, it is crucial that the outputs of voting machines become audit-able. Governance itself must also be accountable.This monthly blog will address this concern, drawing experience from international standards and highlighting possible "home-grown" solutions.
